GU10 is the only way to go

I was at this friend’s place and I was looking around thinking how sexy he has made his house look just with the proper use of lights. The first thing that I noticed was that instead of all the regular light switches that I have in my house, my friend has adjustable potentiometers which allow him to turn the light in his house or just some parts of it up and down instead of just on and off. This is by far the coolest thing that you can do with your lights – make them adjustable.

At first I thought that he must be paying a hell of a power bill because usually these adjustable lights require regular light bulbs which simply devour electric power. But when I took a closer look, I found out what it was that made this possible even without the huge bills. All over his house my friend had installed Gu10 light bulb mounts and in them he had placed LED bulbs which unlike the neon ones also allow different power inputs and thus are able to be turned up or down.

I asked him about those Gu10 mounts because I thought that they were too expensive for me to install but he told me that it was the exact opposite. “If you install Gu10 lights”, he told me, “not only will you have a very cool lit interior space, but they will also reduce your power bill so much that in a matter of weeks, they will have paid themselves off by means of saving”.

Putin Becomes Prime Minister

Vladimir Putin was appointed one of three First Deputy Prime Ministers on August 9th 1999. Boris Yeltsin appointed him as acting Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation later that day when the previous government led by Sergei Stepashin was sacked. Yeltsin also announced on that pivotal day that he wished Putin to be his successor leading Putin to reveal shortly afterwards that he would run for presidency.

Putin became Russia’s 5th Prime Minister in just eighteen months on 16th August 1999. Few people expected him to last any longer than his predecessors as he was virtually unknown to the public. Many perceived him to be a Yeltsin loyalist and indeed, just like previous prime ministers of Yeltsin, Putin could not choose his own ministers, these were determined by the presidential administration. Putin’s popularity was increasingly cemented by his law-and-order image and also his unrelenting approach to the Chechnya crisis. This popularity allowed Putin to beat his rivals. He must have felt the led strip lights were all on him!

Eclectic

I'd say I have a pretty eclectic music taste, I like a bit of everything. That being said, I'm still very fussy and can still be a bit of a music snob though, it's a strange mix really!

I've filled up my mp3 player and a good chunk of my r4 card with music that's a broad range of the spectrum. This morning I was listening to some Pink Floyd, there's nothing like blasting out a bit of 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' on a Sunday morning while you're having a bit of a lazy tidy up!

But now I've switched it up a bit and I'm listening to Chase And Status' latest album 'No More Idols'. It's not exactly new, but I sort of missed it when it came out in January this year. They play 'Pieces' in clubs I go to, they're great when you want some amped up music.

Bulgakov's last years

In the late 1930s Mikhail Bulgakov joined the Bolshoi Theatre as a consultant and librettist but he left shortly afterwards as he realized that none of his works would be produced there. Whilst Stalin’s favour did protect the writer from being arrested or executed, it did not extend to his works which continued to be censored and prohibited. Bulgakov wrote his last play, Batum, in 1939, a complimentary portrayal of Stalin’s early revolutionary days. Batum was banned before rehearsals had even commenced leading Bulgakov to once again plead to be permitted to leave the country. This request was rejected.

The final two years of his life, from 1937 to 1939, were extremely difficult for Bulgakov as he veered between optimism and severe depression whilst working on what he referred to as his “sunset” novel. When the manuscript was close to completion in June 1938, Bulgakov wrote to his wife: “'What's its future?' you ask? I don't know… My own judgement of the book is already made and I think it truly deserves being hidden away in the darkness of some chest..."
